The evangelist Matthew refers to Is7,14 in Mt1,23. The text at Is7,14 is: ``The young woman is with child and will give birth to a son whom she will call Immanuel.''; The text at Mt1,23 is: ``Look! the virgin is with child and will give birth to a son whom they will call Immanuel.'' According to the literal meaning of Is7,14 the prophet had most likely the birth of a son to Ahaz in mind. According to the spiritual interpretation of the evangelist however Is7,14 prophetically refers to the birth of Jesus. ``Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, `Woman, this is your son'. Then to the disciple he said, `This is your mother.' (Jn19,2) It is worthwile noting that Jesus did not start to talk to St. John in the sense `Take good care of my mother'. On the contrary, Jesus starts addressing his mother using the solemn word `Woman', indicating that he was giving her a mission. The mission to be a mother to the disciple whom he loved cannot be restricted to the Evangelist St. John because in everything Jesus does, he does not only think of the ``disciple whom he loved'' but also of all who through the teaching of his disciples come to believe in him: ``I pray not only for these, but also for those who through their teaching will come to believe in me. May they all be one, just as Father, you are in me and I am in you, so that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.'' (Jn 17,20-21)
